The fight for teacher diversity and inclusion has been expanding and reached a crescendo in the past year. The Fellowship, BMEC’s national convening is the convergence point of one of the most important social justice issues of our time. At National BMEC, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with a dynamic range of creative change-makers confronting narratives towards representation, programming for youth development, as well as inclusion and teacher diversity

KING’S CONVERSATION: PREPARING BLACK MALE STUDENTS FOR THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
Did you know that to date only 35% of black male students who attend college actually graduate? During this session, attendees will have the opportunity to go over what obstacles black male students may face in college that can affect their experience. Attendees will also explore what educators and supporters can do to help increase the graduation rate by better preparing black male students for the college experience, the holistic college experience.
CREATING A STEM CULTURE FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
This session will explore national frameworks to create foundations for integrated STEM to become a reality. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the importance of starting with specific goals around supporting STEM literate students, creating an achievable path built on an integrated set of science, engineering, and other cross-curricular practices.
WRITE YOUR LIFE: USING HIP HOP AND SPOKEN WORD TO PROMOTE SELF DEVELOPMENT
Write Your Life is a first-person art workshop that uses hip hop and spoken word poetry to promote youth development and resiliency. This workshop shows how creative writing and performance based activities encourage youth to develop skills that support spirituality and wellness; life-long learning; identity development; understanding of culture and community building; and promote education attainment.
NAVIGATING AUTHENTICITY AND CAREER PROGRESSION
This session focuses on building one’s authenticity as a teacher with students and colleagues, as well as building a reputation for your craft inside and outside the classroom. This interactive dialogue will address career dilemmas that black male educators often experience and strategies to work through them.
